would you let your baby use this walker? I didn’t buy it?

Fancy asked:
My mother-in-law asked what we she could get for our 3 month old for Christmas and I told her to get a book or an educational toy. So of course she doesn’t listen and buys this Fisher Price Stride walker. http://www.etoys.com/genProduct.html/PID/4762035/ctid/17/INstock/Y/D/?_e=4790d_v=4790D3CFJzgKa4D086F98D2C
I heard horror stories about walkers- kids falling down stairs
and bashing their faces in if they trip over or on these things. I don’t like the idea of this thing… I don’t ever plan on using it indooors but maybe I can warm up to the idea of him using it outside when he is a lot older. What do you think about this?
thanks for all of the responses. Maybe I am just a nervous first time mom.

Thats what we have. Our child loved it. He never got hurt on it at all. Children falling down stairs in a walker – that is the kind of walker where the child is inside the walker not this kind. And you can trip over any toy.
If you wait til he is much older he wont like it anymore. Ours gave it up as soon as he could walk good on his own and would only ride on it then.

I am a mother of 3 fixing to be 4 and I can assure you that a walker is one of the best gifts you can ever receive! Yes they can be dangerous arounds stairs,. keep it away from stairs and you are good to go. i loved the walkers and so did all of my kids. I have never had an injury due to a walker and I also run an in home daycare that I use walkers for kids.

well for one your baby is 3 months, no where near walking time yet. that was a pointless gift, would have been better for next year. also if you do plan on using it, dont let your baby use it around stairs, watch them, and nothing too serious should happen. and dont use until you feel your baby is ready for it, with speed and balance. good luck and grandparents can stink sometimes, and they jsut dont seem to EVER listen!

Those are GREAT! The bad ones were the old fashioned ring walkers where you put ur baby in them and they just kinda sit in a cloth sling and walk around. The baby couldn’t get out of it and couldn’t see where they were going. God I’m suprised any of us lived to adulthood!

My son loves those type of things. The dangerous walkers are the ones they sit down in, like an exersaucer with wheels. They can’t get out by themselves and are stuck when they tip over. If you are concerned about stairs, use a baby gate or don’t allow him around them.

My nephew actually has one of these and I think it is a great product for kids, it keeps them entertained and helps them begin walking. Obviously with something like this you need to take precautions. Gates on the stares and maybe only let him use it in a empty cleared space. My nephew uses it in the kitchen a lot. With all toys there are dangers, you just need to take the right precaution measures and keep an eye out.

I bought something similar for my 6 month-old daughter for Christmas. She’s not ready to use it yet but when the time comes of course I’ll use it. Even though your son isn’t anywhere near walking or crawling, this toy will be beneficial when the time comes. The horror stories you hear may be from parents not paying attention to their children and not having the proper safety gates up at doorways/steps. When using a toy like this, when your child is still unstable, you shouldn’t ever leave him unattended with it. Wait until your baby is ready to use the toy and then re-evaluate it.

Walkers are really good for your baby, helps them develop muscle. if your worried about them falling down the stairs, dont let them play around the stairs, put up baby gates. And you can trip over your own feet so i wouldnt worry about that. Your little one is going to get plenty of brusies and bumps on their own without the help of toys, its just part of them growing up and becoming their own independent person

My daughter has the same toy but a different brand. She loves it. She refuses to use it in the standing up position. But she loves sitting on it as a ride on toy. She is 10 months.

I dont have a problem with these types of walkers and think aslong as everything is moved out the way and stair gates are put up and the floor is clear and they are always used with adult supervision then its fine. Its the walkers that you sit children in so the push themselves around with their feet (mainly toes!) that I have a problem with. These are dangerous and alot of children have fallen down stairs in them etc. My daughter has one similar to the one you just showed and I think they are ok.

Give Your Baby a Headstart
Children fall down stairs when mommy and daddy aren’t watching them… but if you don’t feel comfortable with it then don’t let them use it take it back and exchange it for something you would approve of.

That type, yes, I would. The danger is far greater with the odl walkers where the child is actually INSIDE teh thing. With those if the walker starts down teh stairs USUALLY thwe child will let go adn just fall ont eh floor. The old ones the child has to go with it. IT is far too easy to take other precautions now to keepo a child from stairs. The old walkers dont help them learn to walk, where these might as they actually let the child use their legs properly.

They are great…although it is just going to sit for about 8 or so months. The really unsafe ones are the ones that have wheels and a child sits in. The are actually illegal in Canada. Take it back to the store. But if you keep it away from the stairs, its great.

That one? Sure. That’s not a walker in the traditional sense. Walkers are when the baby is placed inside the thing and can’t get out. What you are showing is just fine.
Old style walkers are illegal where I live (Canada). You can’t even give one away. The old style ones are death traps.
That one is fine.

This is one of those things that just need to be monitored by someone with common sense. Obviously, if you have stairs, you gate them off or don’t let the child near them. Which is no different than any other day hopefully. And kids trip over everything. Even as adults we have times where we trip on something on the floor or over our own two feet. You can’t prevent your child from tripping. Look around your house, there are plenty of things that could harm your child to an extent if they tripped and fell on it. Doorways, table legs, etc.
Now obviously a 3 month old isn’t going to be able to use it yet anyway. But once he’s old enough, and who ever is watching him with it is using common sense, he’ll be fine.

At 3 months that is useless to your child. but you already knew that. I used the walker that has the seat in it, when they were old enough for it of course. I made sure that the floor was always picked up, we didn’t have stairs, so not an issue. All 3 of my boys couldn’t stand to stay in one spot for long, so this was a lifesaver for me.
Edit: before anyone starts ranting at me about having used the ones with the seat, this was 15-20 yrs ago, and my children were never left unsupervised in it. They never tipped over in them either. Plus with ANY child product or toy, you take proper precautions and things are fine. Also, my son’s walk fine, no problems caused by using a walker with a seat in it, Son 20 yrs old, son 16 yrs old, son 15 yrs old.

My son has like 3 different walkers and they are the best thing ever, my son never bashed his face of fell down the stairs ( thank the parents for that). I’m sure your little one will love it. Dont be so harsh on your mother in law, she had a kid and she knew how to raise him.

Does Your Child Love Animals?
I have the playskool version that is green and not actually an animal, but it’s the same principal and style. We also have one of the old style fisher price ones that is an easel. We got the walker for my daughter when she was 9 months old, but she never really used it until recently(13 months now), and still doesn’t use it in the house very often. The walkers you read about that are most responsible for falls down the stairs are actually the other kind, that baby sits in, instead of on. But she does love to play with it, even when not walking. We took it outside recently during some gorgeous days and my daughter walked all by herself for about a mile. I was more wore out than she was from chasing her around with it, lol. These are actually the better walkers because they turn into a ride on, every toddlers favorite toy. So double the use. As well as they teach baby to walk properly without much support, so they learn balance a lot sooner, versus the ones that baby sits in, which ideally should not be used after baby is crawling. It’s a good toy, as long as you keep it on ground level, the only problem you’ll really have is that your son will be so excited to be going on his own that he’ll push it faster than he can go and come down on his knees a lot, lol. But when they’re this age, lol, they do that a lot, the other day my daughter learned she could look up and walked chin first into a few walls, hehe, I was rolling(she wasn’t hurt, cept maybe her pride, lol) By the time your son is walking, you’ll have relaxed quite a bit about what toys you allow him to play with. I was the same way and didn’t allow any large loud musical toys or walkers or any of it, but by the time her b-day(2wks before xmas) and xmas itself, she now has the sing n play stage from fisher price(awesome toy by the way, wish I would of bought it months sooner) the learning leap frog musical table, the amazing animals train, the fisher price ball popper(another great one to get) and matching train. I could go on, lol, but I know I’ll pretty much let her have em all now. Good luck!
